Common wasp – Vespula vulgaris, German wasp – Vespula germanica

Wasps are widespread across the UK and northern Europe.

Similar to ants, they are social insects that live in colonies made up of workers (infertile females), males, and a queen.

Hornets belong to the wasp family and share a very similar life cycle.

Wasps typically build nests in earth banks, roof spaces, wall cavities, trees, or bushes.

They create new nests each year, with workers and males dying off in colder months. Only young queens survive winter to establish new nests in spring.

Wasps can be a nuisance for several reasons. In late summer, when workers no longer need to feed larvae high-protein food, they seek out sweet substances like fruit, jams, and syrups. They often enter kitchens in search of sweets and, while not usually aggressive, will sting if provoked.

As the weather cools, wasps become more irritable, especially as they feed on over-ripe fruit, which can make them appear “tipsy.” It’s best to leave them alone during this time.

Earlier in the year, wasps cause little trouble aside from minor damage to wooden fences and building timber, which they use to construct their nests.

Wasps play a useful role by scavenging larvae of other insects, controlling garden pests, and clearing carcasses early in the season. They also help dispose of rotten timber if available. However, they may carry diseases picked up from dustbins, bottle banks, and carcasses, potentially contaminating food if they settle on it.

A wasp sting injects venom, causing redness and swelling. In some cases, more serious reactions occur, so medical advice should be sought if symptoms worsen.

When nests are built in or near your property, this poses a particular risk to all occupants, including pets.
